Matching

# Match It

Visual matching to sample

A sample picture is at the top. The learner drags the sample onto the matching picture below, or taps that picture. The match can be the same photo, a different photo of the same item, or a different item in the same group. You can set Drag and drop to off. Then only taps work.

## When

- Use with early learners who do not follow spoken instructions. Matching uses no words.
- Teach scanning and attention to pictures before listener and tact work on the same items.
- Examine if a learner knows an item in different photos, and knows which items are in the same group.

## Why

- The only speech is “Match it.” It plays the first time that the learner touches the sample in each turn. It never names the picture. The app does not score a touch on the sample.
- The levels become more difficult in this sequence: identical pictures, scattered pictures, different photos of the same item, items from the same group, and a different photo in 10 pictures with 3 similar pictures.
- Two pictures that contain or look like each other never show in the same array. Items that can also be in the group are never incorrect choices. Only the 3 similar level adds similar incorrect pictures, and always exactly 3.
- If the learner taps an incorrect picture, the app highlights the correct picture. This is a prompt. The app does not score it as correct.

## How

1. On the setup screen, select a level:
    - **Same photo · 3 pictures** — The learner finds the same photo as the picture at the top, in a group of 3 pictures. This level uses 20 items.
    - **Same photo · 6 pictures, scattered** — The learner finds the same photo as the picture at the top, in a group of 6 pictures. The pictures are at different angles and positions. This level uses 40 items.
    - **Different photo · 4 pictures** — The learner finds a different photo of the same item. For example, the learner matches one dog photo to a different dog photo. The learner selects from 4 pictures.
    - **Different photo · 6 pictures, scattered** — The learner finds a different photo of the same item, for example a different dog photo. The learner selects from 6 pictures at different angles and positions.
    - **Same kind of thing · 4 pictures** — The learner selects a different item in the same category. For example, the learner matches a dog to a cat, because the two are animals. The learner selects from 4 pictures.
    - **Different photo · 10 pictures, 3 similar** — The learner finds a different photo of the same item. The learner selects from 10 pictures at different angles and positions. 3 incorrect pictures are similar to the correct item, for example a cat, a bird, and a fish for a dog. This level uses 30 items.
2. In **More settings**, under **Drag and drop**, select:
    - **On** — The learner can drag the picture to the answer, or tap the answer.
    - **Off** — The learner taps the answer. The picture does not move.
3. In **More settings**, under **Praise**, select:
    - **On** — After a correct answer, the app also plays a short praise phrase, for example “Great job!”
    - **Off** — After a correct answer, the app shows the star and goes to the next turn. The app plays no praise.Praise is off at the start. A change to Praise does not change the scoring. It does not start a new phase on the graph.
4. Tap **Play**.
5. Point to the sample, or help the learner touch it. The first touch in each turn plays “Match it.”
6. Let the learner drag the sample onto a picture, or tap a picture. If the match is correct, the sample goes onto the picture, the learner gets stars, and the next trial starts. If the match is incorrect, the sample goes back, and the app prompts the correct answer.
7. Use **Skip**, **Log**, **Reset count**, and **End** the same way as in Find It. Each round has 10 trials.

**Saved to the dashboard:** The first answer on each trial, by drag or by tap, and skips. Each sample item is a target. The most frequent errors show the picture that the learner selected. A change of level starts a new phase on the graph. A change to Drag and drop does not start a new phase, because taps work with the two settings.
